I found the overall concept quite powerful - I hadn't seen anything like it before. George knew about growing the business through strong marketing and had the skills to go about it. He played a big part in the execution of the agreed strategy and trained both myself and Julia to equip ourselves better. He emphasised the importance of maintaining contact with customers and retaining them. He taught us to take a step back, to gain some perspective on the business, and also showed us the tools with which to improve it. I was well out of my comfort zone, mainly because I had not had the time to doing anything but run the business. I was trying to do everything myself, including dealing directly with clients, aiming to maintain previous levels in spite of the recession and finding it hard to change things. George showed us that we needed more structure to the business and that we needed to systemise the process all the way from inquiries to production. He is a methodical operator and it was clear we needed to be more methodical too.
We now have a new team of staff, including an operations manager, James, who knows exactly what the business structure should look like. The idea was to get someone else to keep the jobs running more effectively and to gain momentum, and George's ideas are very clear and well understood by everyone in the company. We have a clear direction that they didn't have before. It also means that I can be more hands-off and offload more of the operational side to James, making my input more strategic. There are only so many hours in the day, so they have to add value.
